Pocket Notes There’s a funkily innovative art show happening this first weekend of June. It’s called “Curiosities” and It takes place in moving van on three different Edmonton streets for three consecutive days. The “fast and dirty collective” is putting this on, and I was invited to be in it with my ‘autographs and pocket notes’ collection which I have never shown anyone before. You get to rummage through my stuff! Pictured above are a couple samples of my notes collected over the years in my little pocket notebooks. I remember that, in elementary school, every morning we would stand and salute while we pledged allegiance to the Queen. When we said, “and to her I pledge my love and loyalty,” we were all to turn our heads and look at the framed photo of Queen Elizabeth on the classroom wall. How do you properly bury a fish? One of my favorite – and largest – aquarium fish died today. I decided against a burial at sea (the last time I tried that, it clogged the toilet for three days). But I did want to give him something better than just chucking him out … so I buried him under a tree in the backyard, wrapped in the TV Times (fish and chips symbolism). I said a few words. It was nice.

This is a new painting – and a mate to another one titled “Flickers In the Backyard”. Magpies are everywhere.

“Calm and Ready” by Wilfred Kozub acrylic and gouache on w/c paper, 15 1/2” x 11 1/2 ” , 2012
The intent of the dastardly magpies is that the baby robin is going to get it. But the mother is calm and ready and won’t let it happen.
When I was a kid, I had a friend who got between a mother robin and her baby. The mom dive-bombed my friend and left a bloody beak bite on his forearm.
Bloody beak bite.
Bloody beak bite.
Bloody beak bite.
Have I just invented a tewwific tongue twister? Twy it!
Bloody beak bite.
Bloody beak bite.

This is what a lazy summer day sounds like to me. I recently wrote and recorded this little piece to get y’all ready for summer. It’s starting to feel good again. Can you picture it?

Geez, it must be pretty bewildering for a little guy stepping out into this buzzing world!
… and here’s the Sport Climbing Structure in Andorra that gave me the idea for the painting you just saw (below)
.
Climbing Structures by Wilfred Kozub
Acrylic on canvas 38 1/2 inches x 28 inches October, 1999
This unusual painting was inspired by a trip to the Principality of Andorra (Europe) with my family. When we were taking a train into the capital, Andorra la Vella, we saw an interesting outdoor sport climbing structure. I held this in my memory and later painted this painting, inspired by that climbing structure. The scene in my painting looks pretty daunting, and the dwellings in the foreground are kinda mysterious.
