Yes, it was an accidental photo. While I was about to take a photo of my ‘art’ table at the Royal Bison art & craft fair, I must have touched the shoot button on my iDevice without realizing it, and I got this photo which, it turns out, I like quite a lot. You?

In A Minute x3 is track 3 on the new album, “I’m In...

In A Minute x3 is track 3 on the new album, “I’m In Love With The City,” by us guys, Wilfred N & the Grown Men. Nik Kozub also did a remix of this for our album … “In A Minute x 3 (the Paronomasiac remix)” – Nik Kozub being said Paronomasiac. Do we love it? Yes! We love it!

Here’s a little true story for ya … One day I was on an undergound train with my headphones on, loudly playing an early mix of this song. It was the end of a work day and, at the next stop, eight or ten tired-looking, regular pudgy people got on the train car, and all of them – pretty much simultaneously – fell asleep in their seats. It was a beautiful and unusual ‘video’ that unfolded in my brain as my song played ‘doo doo doo’. I imagined a little animated space guy, with a glass bubble around his head, flying to each person asleep, eyes closed, in the train … having a close up little look. The scene, part real and part in-my-head, was wonderful. The little space guy came from my memory of Sammi the Spaceman in the Little Lulu and Tubby comics from when I was a kid. The scene was a full-on movie … fantastic! My imagination struck out other scenarios as the song progressed. I imagined a possibly friendly, (at least we were all naïve enough … or desperate for something to make our world better – to want to think they were friendly) soft invasion of a cheery, animated alien race, arriving to exchange their (supposed) lovely lives with our less lovely lives. (“I love my life, I love your life … I love our life. I LOVE LIFE!”)

In the final scene, where the crowd stadium cheering comes in, there is a band singing those words with a joyous (but with suggestions of something ominous) union of our people with their people. Wonderful. And scary. Meanwhile, the guy in the video is texting or fiddling with his personal phone device

… “in a minute I’ll be thinking of something else – nothing can get in the way of love.” Yeah, this is the video-of-my mind for this tune. I guess the song might have been called In A Minute text text text. Who’s playing? The robust drums on this track are by Clint Frazier, and that’s Jamie Philp playing the rippin’ electric guitar lines. Thanks, guys! I did the vocals, keyboards, sleighbells/shaker and acoustic guitars. Nik captured Jamie and Clint with brilliance in the studio.

Dogs in the Forest by Wilfred Kozub gouache on w/c paper ...

Dogs in the Forest by Wilfred Kozub gouache on w/c paper 2002

I was going to leave it at that – just a tiny teaser! But I couldn’t contain myself. So … here is the whole deal on this song, just one of the variations on my tune, “I’m In Love With The City” from the NEW album (is it even an album???) of the same name. It’s Wilfred N & the Grown Men, deeewds !! There are another 3 variations on the song – all very different, each from the other. Do you dig it? I sure hope so. This song will be available on iTunes and all the others very soon. I like it. We like it.

You have probably figured out by now that I am pretty partial to magpies. It’s not that I think they’re the most wonderful bird in the world.
In the fall in Edmonton, I can find brilliant magenta winged seeds on trees in my neighbourhood … just before they are dry enough to take flight.

Waterspout by Wilfred Kozub Acrylic on canvas ...

Waterspout by Wilfred Kozub Acrylic on canvas 13 3/4” x 17 3/4”, 2006

It’s an interesting phenomenon that has always fascinated me. A waterspout (kinda like a tornado over the ocean), sucks up fish, or whatever happens to be underwater, into the clouds. The updrafts are so strong that the little wiggling sea creatures are carried aloft for hundreds or thousands of miles. Then somewhere … maybe Australia … it rains and it pours fish and frogs!! No kidding! This really happens! I have never publicly shown this painting of mine – I gave it away to someone special before it ever made it to a gallery. But I just thought of it as I was uploading a song of mine to SoundCloud. The song is called “Weather and Climate” and you can hear it at www.soundcloud.com/wilfred-kozub

I came back with my camera and found the clouds to be just right, so I pulled onto a service road to get closer. I walked through the abandoned field that was full of gopher holes (watch your ankles!) and got ravaged by mosquitoes, but I got the picture. I wondered what this interesting structure could be, so I asked my trusty Facebook friends, generating a pile of interesting responses. Short story? It’s the smokestack that was preserved when they demolished the old Canada Packers meat packing plant. It has a bit of special meaning for me because I worked for four summers in a meat packing plant in the same area back in the late 60s.

Pocket Notes There’s a funkily innovative art show...

Pocket Notes There’s a funkily innovative art show happening this first weekend of June. It’s called “Curiosities” and It takes place in moving van on three different Edmonton streets for three consecutive days. The “fast and dirty collective” is putting this on, and I was invited to be in it with my ‘autographs and pocket notes’ collection which I have never shown anyone before. You get to rummage through my stuff! Pictured above are a couple samples of my notes collected over the years in my little pocket notebooks. I remember that, in elementary school, every morning we would stand and salute while we pledged allegiance to the Queen. When we said, “and to her I pledge my love and loyalty,” we were all to turn our heads and look at the framed photo of Queen Elizabeth on the classroom wall. One of my favorite – and largest – aquarium fish died today. I decided against a burial at sea (the last time I tried that, it clogged the toilet for three days). But I did want to give him something better than just chucking him out … so I buried him under a tree in the backyard, wrapped in the TV Times (fish and chips symbolism).
The intent of the dastardly magpies is that the baby robin is going to get it. But the mother is calm and ready and won’t let it happen.
